Why Footwear Matters for Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain, and the shoes you wear play a significant role in both causing and managing the condition. Unsupportive footwear can strain the plantar fascia, while properly supportive shoes can reduce pain and promote healing.
As chiropodists, we regularly advise patients on footwear choices as part of their heel pain treatment plan.
What to Look For in Supportive Shoes
Firm heel counter: The back of the shoe should be rigid enough that it does not collapse when you press on it. This provides stability for the heel.
Good arch support: Look for built-in arch support or enough depth to accommodate custom orthotics.
Cushioned midsole: Adequate cushioning absorbs impact and reduces stress on the plantar fascia with each step.
Slight heel elevation: A shoe with a small heel-to-toe drop (10–12mm) can reduce tension on the plantar fascia compared to completely flat shoes.
Adequate toe room: Your toes should have space to move without being cramped.
Shoes to Avoid with Plantar Fasciitis
Certain types of footwear can aggravate plantar fasciitis:
• Flat shoes and flip-flops: Minimal arch support and cushioning strain the plantar fascia • High heels: Alter foot mechanics and can cause or worsen heel pain • Worn-out shoes: Shoes that have lost their cushioning and support should be replaced • Hard-soled dress shoes: Lack of cushioning transmits impact directly to the heel • Going barefoot: Walking without shoes on hard surfaces puts maximum strain on the plantar fascia
The Role of Custom Orthotics
While good shoes help, custom orthotics provide a level of support that off-the-shelf shoes alone cannot match. Orthotics are moulded to your specific foot shape and designed to correct biomechanical imbalances that contribute to plantar fasciitis.
If you have tried supportive footwear without adequate relief, a chiropodist can assess whether custom orthotics would benefit you.
