Understanding Foot Care in Ontario

What Is Chiropody?

Chiropody is the branch of healthcare devoted to the assessment, treatment, and prevention of conditions affecting the feet and lower limbs. In Ontario, a chiropodist is a regulated foot specialist — and the most common type of foot care provider in the province.

The Official Definition

In Ontario, chiropody is a regulated health profession under the Chiropody Act, 1991. A registered chiropodist assesses the foot and treats diseases, disorders, and dysfunctions of the foot by therapeutic, surgical, orthotic, and palliative means. Chiropodists hold a Diploma in Chiropody (D.Ch) and are trained to diagnose foot conditions, perform minor foot surgery (such as ingrown toenail correction), prescribe and fabricate custom orthotics, and administer certain medications.

How Chiropodists Are Regulated in Ontario

Every practising chiropodist in Ontario must be registered with the College of Chiropodists of Ontario (COCOO) — the regulatory body that sets standards of practice, requires ongoing professional education, and protects the public. Registration means your provider has met rigorous educational and clinical requirements and is accountable to a professional college, just like a dentist or physiotherapist.

All three chiropodists at Foot Forward Clinic — Shagana Viveack, Shahd Baradei, and Nasim Rezania — are registered members of the College of Chiropodists of Ontario. You can verify any Ontario chiropodist’s registration on the College’s public register.

Why See a Registered Chiropodist — Not a Nail Salon or GP

For residents of Vaughan and York Region, choosing a registered chiropodist means your foot care is delivered by a regulated healthcare professional using sterilized medical instruments and evidence-based treatment — not a cosmetic service.

Chiropodist vs. Nail Salon

Nail salons offer cosmetic care and are not regulated to diagnose or treat foot conditions. Improperly sterilized tools can spread infection. A chiropodist uses medical-grade sterilization and can safely treat ingrown nails, fungal infections, corns, and calluses — addressing the underlying cause.

Chiropodist vs. Family Doctor

Your family physician is an excellent first point of contact, but chiropodists are foot specialists. We have advanced training in lower-limb biomechanics, can fabricate custom orthotics, perform minor nail surgery in-clinic, and provide ongoing specialized foot care without a referral.
