Normal Development vs. Cause for Concern
Children's feet are different from adult feet — they are still growing and developing, and many things that look concerning are actually normal stages of development. However, some signs warrant a professional assessment.
Understanding the difference can save unnecessary worry while ensuring real problems are caught early.
Flat Feet in Children
Flat feet are normal in babies and toddlers. The arch typically develops between ages 3 and 6. Most children with flat feet do not experience any pain or functional problems.
When to seek care: If your child's flat feet are causing pain, fatigue during activities, frequent tripping, or if only one foot is flat, a pediatric foot assessment is recommended.
In-Toeing and Out-Toeing
Many children walk with their feet turning inward (in-toeing or "pigeon-toed") or outward. In most cases, this corrects naturally by age 8.
When to seek care: If the condition is getting worse rather than better, causes tripping or pain, or affects only one side, have it evaluated.
Growing Pains and Heel Pain
Heel pain in active children (ages 8–14) is often caused by Sever's disease — inflammation of the growth plate in the heel. This is not dangerous but can be quite uncomfortable.
When to seek care: If heel or foot pain is limiting your child's activities, causing them to limp, or not improving with rest, a chiropodist can help with stretching programs, footwear advice, and orthotics if needed.
Warts and Ingrown Toenails in Kids
Plantar warts and ingrown toenails are common in children and can be treated safely by a chiropodist using gentle techniques appropriate for younger patients.
Do not attempt to remove warts or ingrown nails at home — professional treatment is safer and more effective.
