Why Foot Care Matters When You Have Diabetes
Diabetes can lead to two significant foot-related complications: peripheral neuropathy (reduced sensation in the feet) and peripheral vascular disease (reduced blood flow to the feet). Together, these increase the risk of foot ulcers, infections, and in severe cases, amputation.
Regular diabetic foot assessments by a chiropodist can help identify problems early, before they become serious.
Daily Foot Care Routine
Inspect your feet every day. Look for cuts, blisters, redness, swelling, or changes in skin colour. Use a mirror to check the soles of your feet or ask someone to help.
Wash and dry carefully. Wash your feet daily with warm (not hot) water. Dry thoroughly, especially between the toes, to prevent fungal infections like athlete's foot.
Moisturize. Apply a fragrance-free moisturizer to prevent cracked heels, but avoid applying between the toes where moisture can promote infection.
Choosing the Right Footwear
Proper footwear is critical for diabetic foot protection:
• Wear shoes that fit well with a wide toe box • Avoid walking barefoot, even indoors • Check inside shoes for objects or rough seams before wearing • Break in new shoes gradually • Consider custom orthotics for added support and pressure redistribution
Nail and Skin Care
If you have diabetes, take extra care with nail trimming:
• Trim nails straight across and file sharp edges • Do not cut cuticles or use sharp instruments near the skin • Never attempt to remove corns or calluses yourself — see a chiropodist • If your nails are thick or difficult to manage, our medical nail care service can help
When to See a Chiropodist
See a chiropodist promptly if you notice:
• Any wound, cut, or blister that is not healing • Changes in skin colour or temperature • New areas of numbness or tingling • Fungal nail changes or skin infections • Pain or swelling in any part of the foot
Annual diabetic foot assessments are recommended for all people with diabetes. At Foot Forward Clinic, our chiropodists provide comprehensive assessments including neurological and vascular testing. Book your assessment today.
