Signs 1–5: Pain and Discomfort
1. Heel pain that lasts more than two weeks. Morning heel pain that eases as you move is the classic sign of plantar fasciitis. Left untreated, it can become chronic and much harder to resolve.
2. Pain when walking or standing. Feet should not hurt during normal daily activity. Persistent aching, burning, or sharp pain signals an underlying problem — often biomechanical — that a chiropodist can identify and treat, sometimes with custom orthotics.
3. A red, swollen, or throbbing toe. This often indicates an ingrown toenail — and possibly an infection. Early treatment is quick and simple; delayed treatment may require a minor procedure.
4. Recurring corns or calluses. Hard, painful skin that keeps coming back means something is causing abnormal pressure. A chiropodist can remove them painlessly and address the root cause.
5. Ball-of-foot pain or a feeling like walking on a pebble. This may indicate a neuroma, capsulitis, or fat pad issues that respond well to early intervention.
Signs 6–10: Skin, Nails, and Risk Factors
6. Thick, discoloured, or crumbly toenails. These are hallmark signs of fungal nail infection, which will not clear on its own and spreads to other nails over time.
7. Warts on the sole of your foot. Plantar warts are contagious and often painful. Professional treatment is far more effective than over-the-counter remedies.
8. Cracked heels that bleed or will not heal. Deep fissures can become infected — especially in people with diabetes. See our page on cracked heels.
9. You have diabetes. Even without symptoms, Diabetes Canada recommends regular professional foot assessments, because diabetes can reduce sensation and circulation in the feet. Learn about our diabetic foot care program.
10. Numbness, tingling, or cold feet. Changes in sensation or circulation should always be professionally assessed — they can indicate nerve or vascular issues that need attention.
Why Early Assessment Matters
Most foot conditions are progressive: a mild ingrown nail becomes infected, mild heel pain becomes chronic plantar fasciitis, and a small diabetic blister can become a serious wound. Early professional care is faster, cheaper, and far more comfortable than waiting.
Chiropodists are Ontario's regulated foot specialists — no referral is needed, and most extended health plans cover treatment (see our guide: Does OHIP Cover Chiropody?).
